Good Book but 1 Theologically Questionable Statement

Overall, a pretty good weight loss book. However, there is one statement made in the book that I feel is a real stretch. about mid-way the book, Black writes that being overweight (gluttony) is similar to struggling with drunkeness. Using a portion of 1 Cor 6:10, he states "If a drunkard will not inherit the kingdom of God and gluttons are considered the same as drunkards then a glutton will not inherit the kingdom of God either." I find that really hard to believe. Many of the great preachers through the ages have been overweight. I personally don't believe that God would turn away someone from Heaven who had spread the gospel and won souls to Christ, just because they were overweight.

To be honest, I haven't finished the book , but I'm a little over 75% done. Black has only mentioned this point the one time in those couple of paragraphs, so far. I'm not sure if he truly believes what he wrote, or if he just wrote it for the shock value. In my opinion, he could have left that inference out and had a better book and, at least for me, kept his credibility.

Correct

This book has a lot of pseudo-code. These are of the right detail and are correct. I used these algorithms (with my own modifications) to implement the Schreier-Sims method to solve Rubik's Cube - and found no mistakes or important "side issues" left out. This is a "computational" book, and not an introduction into Group Theory (or Permutation Groups), even though the concepts are briefly discussed.

Lovely and interesting!

I got this because i've been reading Josh Lanyon's additions to this series (Petit Morts), which are all wonderful, and i was especially curious about the Chance guy character - the owner of the chocolate shop.

Sean Kennedy's story is different in a very good and interesting way, the atmosphere is palpable, soaringly optimistic but melancholy, i found, at times.
If you're curious about Chance and even if less so, it's a lovely read.

Unusual but very good

Very very good. I liked the structure of the book. The loose change doesn't seem to reflect only a part of the book, but it's as if the author collected all the bits and pieces of Chance's life and put them in a jar to draw from it as needed. It had the teasing of all the beginnings of the series. I think only JCP owns Chance so much to catch his edge of darkness, but in my opinion Sean Kennedy also caught the interesting shades of the character.

Amin Rida is research assistant in the GEDC-Georgia Electronic Design Center at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He holds a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from that same school. He is a member of the IEEE. Manos Tentzeris is an associate professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical and computer science from the University of Michigan. He is a senior member of the IEEE.

Book or PhD thesis?

The book reads more like a PhD thesis than the survey that its title implies.
I was hoping for a survey of where RFID was being used in sensor applications, what chips and antenna designs are available and how systems are being put together by practitioners across a range of applications. It did not fulfill that goal. Instead it provided a nuts and bolts description of antenna design and characterization in the UHF band.

After a few introductory chapters, there are very detailed descriptions of particular aspects of particular projects.
Chapter 1 is 13 pages on ID methods, covering everything from bar codes to proximity cards and RFID.
Chapter 2 is 21 pages on "Fundamentals and Operating Principles for RFID". This is the best chapter for the general technical reader.
Chapter 3 has 10 pages on sensors, ranging from thermocouples to the large hadron collider at CERN.

That section is followed by 10 pages on system design (which omits details such as what microprocessor was used).
Then it's back to another 22 pages of antenna characterization.
Chapter 5 has about 10 pages on research type fabrication methods, including inkjet tag printing and carbon nanotubes for gas detection. Then there is, you guessed it, another 15-17 pages on antenna characterization on different substrates.

The book has its merits. It is clearly written and when it reviews subjects it is effective at condensing a wealth of information to a few pithy points.

A decent textbook with a few formatting weaknesses.

For a person interested in an overview of environmental history and some examples of typical sources used by the field, this is a reasonably good textbook. The pieces excerpted for the various sections are a good sampling of some of the best and well-known scholars in the field, and the primary sources would promote interesting discussion in a classroom setting. Small introductory sections help explain the significance of each. The organization is clear, and the 15-chapter format lends itself well to teaching this book under the 15-week semester system. An appendix provides helpful definitions of common terms and topics, such as ecofeminism and human ecology.
However, the book has several flaws that discourage me from giving it an entirely positive endorsement. First, it lacks an index, a major problem for a book of this type. Second, both primary and secondary sources appear in excerpted form (missing sections are indicated by ellipses) and lack the footnotes from the originals. Although the sources are fully cited in an appendix, this is frustrating for the reader who was looking for a more "intact" representation of the materials in one place.

Surprisingly enjoyable & easy read

This textbook was a requirement for my Environmental History class that I took in 2010. It was very insightful and actually fun to read, though the subject matter was often times very sobering. For example, it's interesting to know that the dumpster/ sewage/ plumbing system is relatively new and that in developing the plumbing system, it re-configured the natural landscape in far-reaching ways than the single toilet we see and use in a private bathroom. We take a lot for granted that happens to be new development and what is truly a luxurious lifestyle in America. The book also reminds and challenges us to re-think the concept of wilderness - that there is no wilderness but a community (perhaps overrun by people).

Best environmental history book.

I read this book front to back and it is one of the only books from college that I kept. I kept it because it is absolutely fascinating. Carolyn Merchant is an awesome environmental historian and the selected readings in this book are worth taking time to look at.

WONDERFUL!

This is a GREAT book for anyone wanting to learn to draw! The exercises are clear, varied and effective. The author also elects to introduce simplified perspective and figure drawing in Lesson 1, growing in complexity in each chapter afterward. I found that a refreshing change as it helped quell my subconscious fear of drawing people and faces.
If you want to learn to draw, or just want to get more comfortable and relaxed with your style, this book is for you!

Great beginners book

This is a great book for beginners in drawing. It's very unintimidating compared to a lot of beginning drawing books out there. If you go to Barnes & Noble, they usually have it on their bargain shelves for $9.95. That's where I got mine...brand new copy. I'm going to have fun with this.
