What is the author's purpose ?

This book is unique. It has no chapters and also entirely different order numbers from the standard edition of the Book of Enoch. It seems the author intended to compose the some of a mystical fable. It is acceptable that this type of books may exist. But I cannot understand what this author makes to express really through the Book of Enoch original. Simply, I was interesting in it than some kinds of other the Book of Enoch. For instance, the book by R.K.Brown, or by J.B. Lumpkin.

Admittedly, R.H.Charles' edition in 1912 is the most important book, of course. Among others of the Book of Enoch, I think D.Olson's book is the particularly finest one.

By the way, a book which relates to Enoch was issued in the end of last year, titled "Fallen Angels and the History of Judaism and Christianity" - The Reception of Enochic Literature - by A.Y.Reed.
This book is excellent and outstanding indeed. I believe anyone who read the Book of Enoch sincerely, give their approval on this (her) book.

a piece of useless junk, blatently misinformed.

This book is so poorly researched it makes fantasy fiction look real. Strathern makes leaps and jumps from out of nowhere, using incorrect dates and facts. The first thing that comes to mind for me is his claim that Eleonora di Toledo and Cosimo de Medici had 6 kids and cloistered the girls up like nuns...... Uhh no they didn't, they had 11 kids that we know of for a fact, and any reputable source will tell you she was a very active caring mother, strict yes, but only by today's standards. There was also a claim that lions in the backyard kept Eleonora up and frightened at night? WTF? where is your reference for that one dude? Stick to your philosophy Strathern, history is clearly not your strength.

Smart read before visiting Florence

On my first visit, I struggled with Florence -- attempting to get my head around a city that was so intellectually and artistically extraordinary but so personally cold and imposing. I bought Strathern's "The Medici" at the Rome before my return flight, and in it found the framework to understand the city that has guided subsequent visits. The work reads like a epic novel (the details and anecdotes are not perfect), providing an intergeneration chronicle of this grand and consequential family who through unprecedented wealth and ego helped spark and flame the Renaissance and who, in many ways, symbolized what was great and terribly wrong about every age during which they lived and ruled. Unlike other Strathern books, this one is difficult to find in the US, and I have bought it a few times, as I find myself inevitably giving my copy to friends planning a trip to Florence. You can read the travel guides while you are there; this may be the best history book to read to prepare you for your visit.

Far Reaching

I've read a work by this author before similarly on the Renaissance period and find that he makes the history very accessible. The Medici influence reached far beyond Florence both in time, we enjoy the effects of their patronage now, and in space, it was a Medici pope that Henry VIII had to deal with. The book is thorough with out being over bearing. I recommend it to anyone who has an interest in this formative period of world history.

This publication released to a wider audience the work on Assyrian inscriptions of Sir Henry Rawlinson (1810-95), who had begun his career in the East India Company in Persia and Afghanistan, where his exceptional linguistic skills were recognised. He had been studying the monumental, trilingual (in Old Persian, Elamite and Babylonian) Behistun inscription of Darius the Great since 1836, and, building on the earlier research of Georg Friedrich Grotefend, delivered a summary of his progress in decipherment to the Royal Asiatic Society early in 1850. He intended to follow it up with a longer book, but was anxious to gain credit for primacy (which was questioned at the time and still remains controversial), and so published this short work in March 1850. It states Rawlinson's theories, and offers a linguistic and archaeological background to his work, along with his interpretation of king lists and other inscriptions.

About the Author
Nick Collins is a lecturer at the University of Sussex. A composer, performer and researcher in the field of computer music, his research interests include machine listening, interactive and generative music, and computational musicology. He co-edited The Cambridge Companion to Electronic Music (2007) and The SuperCollider Book (2011) and wrote the Introduction to Computer Music (2009). Margaret Schedel is an Assistant Professor of Music at Stony Brook University. A composer and cellist specialising in the creation and performance of 'ferociously interactive media', she sits on the boards of 60x6, the BEAM Foundation, the ICMA, and Organised Sound. She has edited issues of the Journal of Visual Culture on Sound Art and Organised Sound on Visual Music. In 2009 she won the first Ruth Anderson Prize for her interactive installation Twenty Love Songs and a Song of Despair. Her research focuses on gesture in music, and the sustainability of technology in art. She serves as Co-Director of Computer Music and is a core faculty member of cDACT, the consortium for digital art, culture and technology.

Scott Wilson is a Senior Lecturer in Composition and Live Electroacoustic Music at the University of Birmingham. Primarily a composer, his works have been presented internationally, and include compositions for both instrumental and electroacoustic forces, as well as multimedia pieces. He has been active in the development of software for use with Birmingham ElectroAcoustic Sound Theatre, the Music Department's loudspeaker orchestra, and in developing new approaches for large-scale multichannel electroacoustic composition. He is also involved in the development of the SuperCollider computer music language and was co-editor of The SuperCollider Book, with Nick Collins and David Cottle.

The study concludes that this is attributable to the failure of extractive companies to respond to the social and environmental issues of most concern to local host communities. The idea is that extractive companies could actively contribute to peace building if they were to engage with the interdependencies between business activity and the root causes of conflict.

Don't feel bad for the officer

I did NOT receive a discount for my purchase. I used part of it to prepare for a criminal charge of Interference with Official Acts resulting in Bodily Injury (basically resisting arrest and officer chipping his tooth when he tackled my client from behind).. There were a few things I haven't done before in strategy so I used it to tweak my normal trial strategy in a criminal case I was expected to lose. It helped me refine my cross-examination on the officers testifying. Don't feel bad for the officer, my client was grabbed up after he rendered first aid on a shooting victim.

I first learned about this book when another attorney in a co-defendant case found an excerpt on the internet that she used in a suppression motion that I joined. She got a judge to suppress the evidence and just scrambled the prosecutor's brain over the result!!!

I JUST WISH I HAD IT IN HARD COPY FORMAT. I still like some of my stuff to be in hard copy.

Unusual Depth and Accessibility

This is an excellent overview of impressionist painting as well as a good introduction to painting methodology in a particular historical context. The author provides the reader with a basis for really understanding the aesthetic agenda of the impressionists by explaining the context in which it developed; traditional academic painting, material changes in the artist's media, the influence of photography, political undercurrents and broader social change, as well as the character of each individual painter.

But it's the illustrations that really make this book useful, engaging you both through ideas and concrete examples of their application. Great for the painter, fans of impressionism, or anyone wanting to understand the visual arts.

The author devotes 3-4 pages for each work of art, pointing out elements of the design, use of colors, and style of each artist portrayed. The art as a whole is shown, then various parts of the whole are blown-up and described in detail. Very useful tool for understanding how each artist approached his subject, highlighting problem areas, over-painted areas, and other details of interest on each painting. I only wish there were a whole book like this on EACH of the artists presented, with equivalent commentary on all their work!

I have read the reviews of Mason Dixon and "A Customer" (both from 2004) and I agree with them. What they wrote is basically what I think (and I won't repeat here what they have said). I do add the following explanation of why I rate the book at "only" 4 stars--which of course is a high recommendation.

While the book is very helpful and well done, its reproduction of paintings is rather mediocre (not horrible, not great). Nevertheless, it IS sufficient to illustrate points made in the text and to give a decent idea of the paintings' beauty. Overall, a very nice book.

Excellent

I picked this up completely on a whim after hearing someone mention it online. It is absolutely an amazing work. To really get a feel for how far this country has come in 50 short years, and to really understand how far we have left to go, you need to read this.

As a white male, I've always been offended by the term 'white privilege', because it implies that I somehow didn't work for what I have. But having read this, I can finally appreciate it. My 'white privilege' has nothing to do with me not working hard and not deserving the things that I have accomplished. I have worked hard, and I do deserve those things.

But these are things that blacks never had the opportunity to do. No matter how smart they were, no matter how well dressed, or well spoken, no matter how *white* they tried to appear to blend in, they would never be given the opportunity to prove themselves on their own merits. Their opportunities were taken away before they ever had a chance to even attempt to do grab them.

And while I can definitely appreciate how far we have come in a relatively short time, I am now able to see with a fresh new perspective the things that are still wrong with our thinking today.

I highly recommend this book

The book was written in 1960 and is still relevant today. John Howard Griffin turned himself into a Black man using medications and sunlamp treatments. He then proceeded to visit several southern cities. He describes his treatment by white people, who weeks before had greeted him in a friendly manner when he was white, with hatred an ignorance. He talks about walking several miles to find a bathroom or a place to get a drink of water. He also tells how black people would go out of their way to help a fellow black man. The book is well written and makes you think seriously about the present state of race relations in the light of all the current race issues. White people need to read this book. I highly recommend this book.

I first read this book when I was a teenager in a small town in Oklahoma at the urging of my mother. It was eye-opening and I was appalled by the truth within its covers. It influenced me more than any other book. I read it again at this juncture after more than fifty years to observe the changes in our shared lives. There are many. Those changes seem to exclude certain hearts that cling doggedly to their own unacknowledged fear of anyone who is not the same as they.

We are not seems anything new when we see today's headlines; we are just seeing the ugly reality of a nation that has not progressed.
