Poetic Philosophy with Equations

"Fragments of Existential Mathematics" is not really about mathematics. Instead, Derobert defines philosophical terms and personal relationships and then represents these as equations. The book begins: "Let us define maze as the weighted sum of the distances between the real, experienced, and ideal beings that make up a person, and the real, experienced and ideal worlds that the person inhabits." He goes on to represent this relation between the individual and the world as an equation. Hundreds of such "equations" illuminate the relationships — romantic and otherwise — and trade-offs as we wander through the Maze. I would classify this as delightful and quite original poetry with often profound philosophical and existential insight. Laurent Derobert teaches mathematics at a business school in Avignon, France. This is a translation from the original French.

Good First Book from this Author

I enjoyed the storyline and was able to get lost at times in the tale. This book was the first publication of this author, and it does display a bit of novice tendencies, but he does fine work of weaving a story together that makes you want to keep reading to find out what is going to happen next.

I look forward to future works from this author.

Totally worth it!

I'm renting a used for the semester, and honestly after reading a few comments I was skeptical, but as a student living off financial aid I had no choice... It was totally worth the price! I mean it's not brand spanking new but not so beaten up. Maybe a few scribbles but nothing a little pencil eraser can't fix. Got it an hour right before class started. Happy customer!
