not exactly what i expected

this book is helpful however, after each chapter is over i think of things i wish were included in each topic. I also wish there was a practice test or review test at the end or on the cd. It is an easy read. I wish it would explain thing a little better. Would only recommend this book to people who already have a firm grasp on physics and hemodynamics!

I opened my eyes, the air in my bedchamber pulsing with the kind of silence that only comes in the wake of sound - a sound that never should have been there. I waited, listening. Shadows hid the dressing table, my bookshelves, the roses on the wallpaper, each window swathed in a shroud of black. But my room was empty. I felt this as certainly as the satin coverlet clutched in my hand. And then it came again. A soft clink of metal, and a creak of floorboard in the hall. I watched a shaft of yellow light move across the crack beneath my door.

I flung back the coverlet and ran, barefoot and noiseless across the carpet, all thought now narrowed to a single key that stood in the lock on my door. The same key I had forgotten to turn before climbing into bed. My feet stopped of their own accord just before the door, my nightgown tangled about my knees, and quietly I pressed one cheek against the cold mahogany while my left hand felt through the darkness, searching for the key. There was a low murmur in the corridor, a man's timbre, and an answering grumble. Two of them. My fingers found the key. I turned it, slowly, dreading its click. And just as slowly, I felt the knob above my key begin to move, twisted by a hand I could not see on the other side. The door locked with an audible thunk just as the knob gave a short rattle.

At the start of Sharon Cameron's novel The Dark Unwinding, the year was 1852. When she turned 18, Katharine Tulman's life and view of the world changed drastically. After spending years with a cold and manipulative aunt, she was sent to visit her uncle Tully, instructed to simply and quickly witness his state of being and declare him legally insane. But Katharine unexpectedly bonded with Tully, a man whose intelligence was off the charts but whose personality was childlike, fragile. She refused to declare him insane and became his protector instead. This led to encounters with ruthless people who would stop at nothing to get Tully's inventions. Katharine and Tully survived their vicious attacks - but others they loved did not.

Now we move into the year 1854 for the follow-up novel, A Spark Unseen, which begins with two men attempting to kidnap Tully. Katharine and Mary stop them, but not easily. Blood is spilled, the stakes are raised, and new plans have to be made. Katharine and a few trusted individuals journey to Paris, hoping they'll be safer there - and Katharine secretly hopes she will find Lane there as well. But almost immediately she finds more than she was bargaining for in France, where secrets, suspicions, and nosy neighbors abound.

In her follow-up to her engrossing novel The Dark Unwinding, author Sharon Cameron continues to weave together suspense and science in a story filled with both strong and sympathetic characters. Tully's sweet disposition remains unspoiled by the darkness surrounding him; it is easy to understand why his smile helps lighten his niece's heavy heart. I shan't spoil Lane's reappearance and storyline, but I will say it's cool. I appreciate Katharine's cleverness and Tully's smarts; each are crafty in different ways. The aforementioned scientific element is wholly plausible, and the apparatus which is detailed in the opening pages is, in my eyes, gorgeous. The book incorporates art and history as well. If BBC or BBC America optioned these books and made them into a mini-series, I'd definitely tune in - and I think John Noble (Walter Bishop from the TV show Fringe) would make a brilliant Tully.

decent enough but disappointing compared to The Dark Unwinding

When Katharine Tullman took charge of her uncle's estate two years ago, she knew there would be difficulties. She knew there were people who might want Uncle Tully and his brilliant mind; people who might do anything to secure his genius for their own purposes.

She just didn't know she would be dealing with these circumstances on her own.

Nearly two years have past since Lane Moreau left Katharine behind at Stranwyne, promising he would return to her when he could. Katharine has been able, if not happy, to wait until Lane disappears. When she wakes in the night to witness a kidnapping attempt on her uncle, Katharine knows it is time to leave her beloved home.

She travels to Paris hoping to find answers and security for herself and those she holds dear. If she is very lucky, she hopes she will also find Lane.
Unfortunately nothing in Paris is as Katharine expects. Soon enough she caught up in a web of deceit and the political machinations of two governments. Everyone wants something from Katharine or her uncle. But only Katharine can decide whom she can trust in A Spark Unseen (2013) by Sharon Cameron.

A Spark Unseen is the followup to Cameron's debut novel The Dark Unwinding. This story picks up two years after the events of The Dark Unwinding in 1854. After the opening chapters the majority of the novel is set in Paris, France.

Unfortunately, this book suffers for the location change. Stranwyne is so vivid and evocative that it became a character in The Dark Unwinding. By comparison, the Parisian atmosphere in this novel feels dry and unexciting and much of the beauty was lost with the French backdrop. While Katharine is still a delightful heroine even her charms seem diminished as the focus shifts in this book to a convoluted arms race centered around Uncle Tully and his inventions.
Cameron maintains a sense of urgency and page-turning tension throughout the story that will keep readers engrossed. However there is so much plot and so much action that it left very little room for the characters that readers came to love in the first book (or new characters for that matter). So many details had to be packed into such a small space that the entire novel felt rushed and much more plot driven.

A Spark Unseen ties up the story of Katharine and Lane (and Stranwyne) decently enough--fans of The Dark Unwinding will likely want to pick up this sequel to see what happens next. Either way A Spark Unseen remains a very different reading experience from its predecessor, not to mention losing much of the whimsy found in The Dark Unwinding.

Satisfying Conclusion To This Gothic Romance

A Spark Unseen continues two years after the events of the first book. Lane is still missing, Katherine's Uncle is bereft, and the British government looks to finish what the French could not. Katherine flees to France in an attempt to locate Lane and also protect her Uncle. But Bonaparte's spies are everywhere and there truly is no safe place for the Tullmans.

The second novel really delves into the historical aspects of France at the time and is less concerned with the gothic or steampunk/fantastical elements. In fact, pains are made to tie Uncle Tully's inventions to actual inventions of the era. At the end of the chapter is a quick note on the historical items touched upon in the story.

As with book one, Cameron isn't afraid to kill off characters and despite the relocation to Paris, there are still old buildings/sewers/catacombs to explore. Yet, what I liked most about the second novel are the side characters. Each ended up being quirky enough to be interesting and kept my attention despite the lessening of adventure and steampunk-like inventions. As well, the pace is brisk and the plot moves comfortably to tie all the loose ends left in the first book.

In all, an enjoyable light read suitable for early teens on up.

Read the whole book before judging

I actually had the chance to spend time at a seminar that John Fisher put on at the Humane Society. Before his death, he was working very hard to show owners/trainers how to work with their dogs and not use the standard dominance/punishment method. Unfortuantely a previous reviewer must not have read the whole book. You introduce the discs slowly and you are simply dropping them when you introduce them (from a distance of you knee to the floor, because you sit when introducing these) Later when working distance exercises you may toss them near a dog as a distraction...but nothing more. His video show the steps much better. "Training dogs in the human pack" As he states in the book, to get a better understanding of how the discs work he advises you read his other books, this book does not go into full detail. Overall I enjoyed reading Dogwise. They shaped the dogs behavior with NO aggression or punishment. They made the dog figure things out on his own and in a very short period of time. It's great reading if you want to undersatnd how your dog learns and what you can do to teach them in a positive way.

Training your dog... There's nothin' to it!

Dogwise is an amazingly practical guide to training. It gives an insight to dog psyche and is very easy to follow. Training a dog a command takes no more than fifteen minutes, that's my own personal practical and successful experience. You can also help your dog learn other commands based on the same techniques given here, you'll become innovative. The illustrations are great but the number of photographs should have been more. Whatever dogwise is a book that can turn your dog from scratch to a complete police dog in no more than three months. Take my word for it! I strongly recommend dog lovers to give it a try; they and their dogs will both be happy and better off.

A "MUST READ" for the serious bodybuilder

The Steroid Bible in my opinion is a critical part of any serious bodybuilder's personal library. I have read it myself and have made unbelievable gains by making well informed decisions as to which supplements and or steroids are beneficial, detrimental or just plain worthless. People dont understand the benefits to be reaped from using muscle building drugs or even the dangers of missuse. The Steroid Bible tells you everything you need to know about nearly every steroid on the market. I believe this book has saved the lives of thousands of atheletes worldwide just by giving them a no-nonsense, well researched reference to allow them to make INFORMED decisions on how to improve and develop thier bodies the safest way possible. I believe that anyone who attempts to tackle the dangerous and confusing world of steroid use without having read this reference is doing themselves a great injustice, and may be playing "Russian Roulette" so to speak with their own body. Steroid use is not going away, you may as well educate yourself and come to your own conclusions. No other book I have read(and I have read quite a few)is nearly as comlete as the "Steroid Bible". I got my copy from a close friend and I am recommending it to all of my friends and co-workers. If you ever see it in a bookstore, just pick it up and skim through it and Im sure you will be compelled to buy it on the spot.

Valuable information I couldn't get anywhere else

The user experiences in this book made it more than worth my time and money. It gave me a perspective on steroids that I could not get anywhere else. Each user had a slightly different view on steroid use. Instead of just giving you one author's opinion, this book paints a vivid picture of the steroid world by providing detailed first hand accounts of steroid use. The info on side effects, how people get steroids, and steroid alternatives was also quite enlightening.

Complete garbage

Where do I begin? The book is rife with spelling and grammar errors as well as switching paragraph formatting at random places and for no apparent reason. As others have pointed out, the information found in this book could be found with just a bit of internet searching. I suppose if you know absolutely nothing about the subject matter, this book may be of some benefit to you but again this same information is available for free and in better written format on numerous websites and forums. At several points the author repeats himself as if he were making the statement for the first time, which makes me think he just copied and pasted from other sources and didn't even bother to edit for consistency. It is completely disorganized and wanders off on irrelevant tangents such as a lengthy discussion about testosterone replacement therapy and professing opinions on public policy as it relates to drugs and education. The book itself is spiral bound and just feels cheap. For $30+, I should be getting a hardcover. It's difficult for me to even call this a book. It feels more like a failed report put together at the last second by a lazy student.

In the name of all that is holy and good, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. Hide your innocent eyes from its evil and run. The paper it's printed on would have made a greater contribution to humanity as toilet paper. There are good sources of information out there but this isn't one of them. Keep looking.

Her fly-on-the-wall approach gives their triumphs and struggles immediacy. Refined Chimnabai began her marriage to the maharaja of the northern city of Baroda in purdah, which kept married women hidden from men other than their husbands, but after breaking purdah in 1913, she became a champion of women's rights. Sunity Devi, maharani of Cooch Behar (near what is now Bangladesh), forged a close friendship with Queen Victoria and wrote books on India's history for British audiences. Chimnabai's gorgeous daughter, Indira, rejected her arranged alliance in order to marry Sunity's son, and later ruled in her late husband's place as regent of state. Indira's daughter Ayesha defied her parents' wishes so she could become the third wife of the man she loved and was elected to India's parliament in a 1962 landslide. Today, she breeds polo ponies, works on conservationist campaigns and serves on the boards of schools she founded. "In their different ways," Moore writes, "they were icons, modernizers and revolutionaries... inspiring a redefinition of the role of women in modern India." The book's rich details make up for its sometimes stiff prose, as Moore explores everything from the women's elaborate fashions—silk chiffon saris, magnificent jewels and spangled veils—to the politics and strict traditions of India's aristocracy.

A maharani is the wife of a maharaja, and through the lives of four such Indian queens, in two linked families over three generations, Moore demonstrates the changing currents of Indian politics and customs. The story starts with Chimnabai, the first queen to break purdah, in 1913, and ends with her granddaughter Gayatri Devi. Devi was the third wife of the maharaja of Jaipur, but after Independence stripped the princes of most of their power she ran successfully for Parliament. She was also a socialite—Jackie Kennedy was a friend—and the book is generally as concerned with parties and polo matches as with politics. The changes of the twentieth century seem to have been easier on the women than on their husbands and sons. With only a few exceptions (including Devi's husband, who had a heart attack during a polo match), the men died young, from complications of severe alcoholism.

This is an excellent book that takes one back to the fascinating dusk of the glorious days of Indian Royals. Lucy Moore writes in her fluid style the story of four Maharani's all the way back from mid 1800s till now. The book gives an unique peek into the dual lives of Maharanis in their zenanas and the high society of Europe. Must read for subcontinental history buffs.

Fascinating Maharanis at large!

Moore delves into the backgrounds, personalities and personal relationships of these four fascinating Indian Maharanis (all blood-connected to the great Gayatri Devi) in such a fresh way that it is a pleasure to read. Full of anecdotes (I loved the stories about "Ma", the Maharani of Cooch Behar). I devoured the whole book in a trans-pacific flight!

A shame Moore did not publish more family pictures in the book!
