Charlie has crafted a book that speaks about lucid dreaming on many levels.

The HOW-TO section offers the level of instruction that novices need, while serving up novel approaches for those already active in their exploration.

He gives accurate current information on the brain/body science of what is happening when we are conscious in the unconscious process of dreaming.

There is context given as to how the pursuit of lucid dreaming can fit within a spiritual path.

Historically he discusses the lineage of lucid dreaming, offering an in-depth look at how it is woven into Tibetan Buddhism, as well as a review of the modern pioneers of this phenomenon.

There is a frank discussion of the confusion that arises between Out of Body Experiences and Lucid Dreaming.

And for those who want to feed their mind just before bed on stories of lucid dreaming experiences, Charlie offers some fascinating accounts of his nocturnal adventures.

Intelligent, funny, can-do attitude makes lucid dreaming fun and attainable

Long review title, but says it all. Charlie Morley's authorial voice brings lucidity to the realm of possibility for those who have never experienced it, and makes the whole project seem both possible and worth doing. Morley writes from a Buddhist perspective, so his approach to dreams is also ethical ("Don't create negative karma in dreams--you're forming habits that make it easier to do these things in waking life"), which I think is great. Very often lucid dreamers are looking for an escape so they can behave badly while they sleep. Let's start being good in our dreams!

Morley intersperses his writing with little chunks of text titled "Charlie Says" and "Let's [activity you'll be practicing]." The first shows us that this guy is totally human, has had lots of experiences, and is ready for us to have them as well. The second makes becoming lucid seem attainable. For walking meditation, his caption reads, "Let's walk!" For sitting meditation, it says, "Let's do nothing!" For WBTB (Wake Back to Bed), it read, "Let's wake up and go back to bed!" These are humorous, but the techniques that follow are solid and useful for any level of practice.

There is also a top ten section of activities to perform once you become lucid. Surprisingly, coitus is nowhere listed as an appropriate activity! However, there are cool ones like integrating the shadow, spiritual practice, walking through walls, and the like. Great techniques, great guy. Excellent book.

Good solitary book, Best if paired with workshop, though

I had the privilege of attending one of the author's workshop, so my response is a bit biased by the experience, as well as what I learned from the book and was able to put into practice. Before the workshop and reading this book, I had an interest in the subject matter and practice, mostly through the usual channels, as well as reading Stephen LeBerge's book, as well Robert Waggoner's book, both superb introductions to the subject matter. Yet, after making some muddled attempts at following the suggestion located throughout various chapters in those books, as well as exploring some similar suggestions online, I never could achieve much lucidity in my dreaming state, and in fact, began to doubt I ever would. My interest in the phenomenon waned until I took Charlie's two day workshop. The workshop was excellent and brought a lot of information about the phenomenon and practice. Afterwards, though, I still could not achieve lucidity, despite a whole new set of tools and some fresh momentum (I did, however, learn a lot about how I approach sleeping and dreaming, which was having some immediate beneficial effects.) After I started reading the book, though, I managed to have some success with gaining awareness in my dreams, and so, despite much of the material in the book covered in the workshop, even if you have taken the workshop, the book adds much more value and should not be overlooked as a good resource for learning this skill. It is a simple book, a quick read, with clear and concise language. Despite being within the self-help/spirituality vein, it does not get overtly preachy or sappy (though it does come close, but that reflects the author's approach, more than anything else.) If you are familiar with the topic, the book does not dwell on the history and background too much, but if you are unfamiliar, it can give a good starting point to learn more about those aspects, without being too pedantic. It should be noted that the author is a practicing Tibetan Buddhist, and that background comes out throughout the text, so those expecting this to be a neutral "how-to" guide should be aware that there will be discussion on compassion and kindness sprinkled through out, though, it is only fair to note that they are not pushy or preachy, unless you are against concepts of compassion, to start with. The bulk of the book contains simple and effective techniques to achieve lucidity within your dreams, accessing the beneficial effects of this lucidity within the dream state, and carrying those affects over into waking life. The last half of the book discusses how to use lucid dreaming to mollify nightmares, work through problems, generate more perception, and even build new skills or act as therapy for emotional traumas. Thankfully, the author has relegated his own personal lucid experiences to the back of the book, not because there is anything wrong with them, but they would have disrupted the flow of the book and took attention away from its main theme, as well as seem like outcomes that it would be too easy to grow attached to and therefore disrupt one's own practice. In the end, Lucid Dreaming is a practice and mental state worth exploring, that may have real world benefits. This book satisfies that argument, makes the practice accessible to common people, and will be an important read for anyone interested in the subject matter.

In the wake of the Brown decision that declared public school segregation unconstitutional, seminal events in the early stages of the civil rights movement―like the Emmett Till lynching, the Montgomery bus boycott, and the Autherine Lucy riots at the University of Alabama brought the struggle for black freedom to national attention. Orchestrated by United States Senator Richard Brevard Russell Jr. of Georgia, the Southern Congressional Delegation in general, and the United States Senate’s Southern Caucus in particular, fought vigorously and successfully to counter the initial successes of civil rights workers and maintain Jim Crow. The South’s defense of white supremacy culminated with this most notorious statement of opposition to desegregation. The Southern Manifesto: Massive Resistance and the Fight to Preserve Segregation narrates this single worst episode of racial demagoguery in modern American political history and considers the statement’s impact upon both the struggle for black freedom and the larger racial dynamics of postwar America.

The segregationist platform; was it racism or states' rights?

This 1956 tome on segregation reminds me of Strom Thurmond, portrayed in the book Step by Step as a supporter of a cause that he knew was a failure. The die-hard segregationists knew they were fighting a losing battle, but they stuck by it with typical rebel tenacity. They knew Jim Crow was doomed, but still they wouldn’t budge, even as their platform was collapsing. This book raises the question, not of the racism, but how much of it had to do with southern politicians trying to preserve their sovereignty.

Nobody’s sure who wrote the Southern Manifesto, but that’s not the point. This book gives background information on the document and the people that abided by it as the Civil Rights movement was changing the county. Jim Crow was a doctrine, not a law, so whatever racists laws existed in the South were based on norms and mores. After World War II, segregation began to ebb, as Black troops returned from the war and wouldn’t put up with it. In the industrial cities of New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Detroit, Black workers were joining the unions in record numbers, not so much out of equality, but to keep them from becoming strike breakers. Then came increased enrollment of Black army veterans under the GI Bill, and when segregation kept them out, they fought back. Almost all of the changes occurred through peaceful protests, not laws. Brown versus the Topeka BOE was a ruling, it couldn’t change the law. Changing the laws were the result of protests.

Senators Oliver Eastland (Mississippi) and Strom Thurmon (South Carolina) both saw the Brown decision as an intrusion on states’ rights. Even if they had no founded objection to Black and White children attending the same schools, their typical southern sense of honor drove them to fight it right down to the last filibuster. At the same time, they were wary of the bad publicity from the Emmet Till murder.

The issue of whether the anti-integration effort was a result of racism or southern stubbornness will no doubt occupy scholars time for years to come.

Dissertation on Agile success factors

I looked forward to reading "an empirical investigation" of the critical success factors of Agile development. Still, I was disappointed. It was (again) a survey-based study with a fairly small group of people who responded to the survey. Next to that, the author makes some statements about agile development that seemed odd.

This book is the dissertation of the author, Dac-buu Cao. It is written as most dissertations I've read... including the enormous space between lines (to make it seem bigger?). To purchase a dissertation in book form for nearly a 100$ is strange and IMHO not worth it in this case.

The book is structured in five chapters and a couple of appendixes. The first chapter is a general introduction to the dissertation. The second chapter is a literature review where the author introduces agile development and also the concept of critical success factors. The study looks for critical success factors for agile development. The third chapter discusses the methodology (of research) and takes success and failure factors from existing literature to discover which one to look for in the survey. The fourth chapter describes the survey that provided the data for the research. The survey was send to Agile Alliance user groups. The last chapter shows the results and conclusions of the study. Interestingly enough, the conclusion was that people's skill and development practices matter... The appendix is worth reading, it gives some of the comments people wrote down during the survey.

I wasn't very enthusiastic about the book. Especially the first parts were disappointing and contained some possible misunderstandings or awkwardly formed sentences. On p19, the author takes a process picture of XP from "an agile book" which is definitively not from the XP books, it reads awkward. The description of a ScrumMaster as a project lead (p23) is awkward and on the same page, the author includes "daily build" as a Scrum practices... which is just wrong. On p46 the author suggests that an Agile failure factor is when "no unit tests are design upfront" which is an awkward way of explaining TDD. Next to that, the author keeps insisting that agile only works for small projects.

I was very disappointed in the beginning of the book. As mentioned, I had expected more than a dissertation for this price (almost 100$ when I bought it). The book was small, and much space between the letters. It could have been written in about 1/4th the current size. The literature overview etc wasn't interesting and I'd recommend to read a different book if you want an overview of agile development. The survey was not larger or much different than other publicly available survey results. I was pretty certain that I was going to give this book an 2 star review, but then the end of the book suddenly turned out to be more interesting. The results of the survey (people skills and development practices matter!) were interesting to me and the appendix provided some insights in agile project success/failure. Therefore, I decided to go with 3 stars, but still... I would not recommend this book unless you are looking for all research done in agile development. If you are just a practitioner then this book is probably not worth reading.

Good book with lots of relevant information

There is very little information on Yakushima in english and this book certainly explains everything you'll need to know about the island. I recently visited Yakshima for 5 days this past may and used this book for the majority of my information. I even used the information in this book to rent my car on the island! One thing the book does not mention is that when you arrive at the ferry terminal, there are people there to greet you with a map of the island and pamphlets in english that detail all the spots you'll want to see. Nonetheless, the information contained in this book is well worth it if you plan to visit yakushima. Additionally, unless you plan on trekking through the island and staying in in the mountains multiple nights, I don't think the map that is suggested in the book is necessary. Yakushima is well traveled, well signed, and the trails I visited for day treks were very well marked.

He re-allocated to CRRC Shanghai Bureau as Deputy Director General in 2007. Dr. Zhang is an experienced financial expert with many articles and books published both in English and Chinese including Exotic Options – A Guide to 2nd Generation Options (1998); Chinese Yuan (RMB) Derivatives Products (2004, English edition), Chinese Yuan Derivatives and Practices (2006, 1st and 2008, 2nd, Chinese eds.), and Chinese Yuan Product Innovation, (2010, Chinese ed.).

Playing for Time

Playing for Time, a grade-A book by Fania Fenelon, is a document not only about the Holocaust, but one that goes deeper: it shows how music brought redemption of spirit in the Hell of Hells. When Fania and her friend are brought to the death camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau, she is recognized by a girl in the camp's orchestra as a Parisian caberet singer. She is accepted in to the orchestra, where she is forced to sing the opera Madame Butterfly for the SS. Fania does not let the hardships of the camp take over her spirit, though. She uses music as a weapon, and, as an orchestrator as well as singer for the group, she orchestrates marches by Jews and anti-Nazis right under the noses of her captors, who never catch on. Fania's love of music allows her to survive Auschwitz, and when she is sent with the rest of the "Orchestra Girls" to Bergen-Belsen near the end of the war, her passion for life pulls her through a severe case of typhus. One day she learns that the Nazis are going to shoot the prisoners of Bergen-Belsen at 3:00 that afternoon. The English arrive at the camp at 11:00 that same morning. Fania just barely survived the war, and afterwards she returned to Paris and started again as a caberet singer. She died of cancer in her hometown in 1983. Playing for Time teaches us many things. It teaches us that the human spirit cannot be killed. It teaches us that good always wins over evil. And it teaches us that if you have a love, stick to it. One day it might just save your life.

The Perfect Book

This is an absolutely incredible book. An already powerful story it is taken to a new level by the constant reminder that this is first hand experience.
It is perfect for nearly anyone, the musician will relate to the music, the historian to the accuracy and the avid reader will simply latch on and be unable to let go.
It brought tears to my eyes.

What can be believed??

I enjoyed reading this book, even though the content is difficult to comprehend with all of the horrors of Auschwitz/Birkenau and Bergen-Belsen. According to several orchestra members, a good portion of Fania's "memoirs" is inaccurate, which I think is a shame. This was brought to light in the book Alma Rose: From Vienna to Auschwitz. I would recommend reading both Playing for Time and Alma Rose: From Vienna to Auschwitz to get a better picture of what life was like for the orchestra. I was also very disappointed to read Fania's degrading names she used for the Polish prisoners, which sadly shows her racist views.

About the Author
Serena Nanda is professor emeritus of anthropology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York. Her most recent book is THE GIFT OF THE BRIDE: A TALE OF ANTHROPOLOGY, MATRIMONY, AND MURDER, a novel set in an Indian immigrant community in New York City. Her other published works include NEITHER MAN NOR WOMAN: THE HIJRAS OF INDIA, winner of the 1990 Ruth Benedict Prize; AMERICAN CULTURAL PLURALISM AND LAW; GENDER DIVERSITY: CROSS-CULTURAL VARIATIONS; and a New York City guidebook, NEW YORK MORE THAN EVER: 40 PERFECT DAYS IN AND AROUND THE CITY. She has always been captivated by the stories people tell and by the tapestry of human diversity. Anthropology was the perfect way for her to immerse herself in these passions, and through teaching, to spread the word about the importance of understanding both human differences and human similarities.

Richard L. Warms is professor of anthropology at Texas State University-San Marcos. His published works include ANTHROPOLOGICAL THEORY: AN INTRODUCTORY HISTORY and SACRED REALMS: ESSAYS IN RELIGION, BELIEF, AND SOCIETY, as well as journal articles on commerce, religion, and ethnic identity in West Africa; African exploration and romanticism; and African veterans of French colonial armed forces. Warms's interests in anthropology were kindled by college courses and by his experiences as a Peace Corps Volunteer in West Africa. He has traveled extensively in Africa, Europe, and Asia. He continues to teach Introduction to Cultural Anthropology every year but also teaches classes in anthropological theory, the anthropology of religion, economic anthropology, and film at both the undergraduate and graduate level. His current projects include an encyclopedia of theory in social and cultural anthropology and a book about the development of anthropology in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
