About the Author

C. Henry Edwards is emeritus professor of mathematics at the University of Georgia.  He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Tennessee in 1960, and recently retired after 40 years of classroom teaching (including calculus or differential equations almost every term) at the universities of Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Georgia, with a brief interlude at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton) as an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow.  He has received numerous teaching awards, including the University of Georgia’s honoratus medal in 1983 (for sustained excellence in honors teaching), its Josiah Meigs award in 1991 (the institution’s highest award for teaching), and the 1997 statewide Georgia Regents award for research university faculty teaching excellence.  His scholarly career has ranged from research and dissertation direction in topology to the history of mathematics to computing and technology in the teaching and applications of mathematics.  In addition to being author or co-author of calculus, advanced calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations textbooks, he is well-known to calculus instructors as author of The Historical Development of the Calculus (Springer-Verlag, 1979).  During the 1990s, he served as a principal investigator on three NSF-supported projects: (1) A school mathematics project including Maple for beginning algebra students, (2) A Calculus-with-Mathematica program, and (3) A MATLAB-based computer lab project for numerical analysis and differential equations students.

 

David E. Penney, University of Georgia, completed his Ph.D. at Tulane University in 1965 (under the direction of Prof. L. Bruce Treybig) while teaching at the University of New Orleans.  Earlier he had worked in experimental biophysics at Tulane University and the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in New Orleans under the direction of Robert Dixon McAfee, where Dr. McAfee’s research team’s primary focus was on the active transport of sodium ions by biological membranes.  Penney’s primary contribution here was the development of a mathematical model (using simultaneous ordinary differential equations) for the metabolic phenomena regulating such transport, with potential future applications in kidney physiology, management of hypertension, and treatment of congestive heart failure.  He also designed and constructed servomechanisms for the accurate monitoring of ion transport, a phenomenon involving the measurement of potentials in microvolts at impedances of millions of megohms.  Penney began teaching calculus at Tulane in 1957 and taught that course almost every term with enthusiasm and distinction until his retirement at the end of the last millennium.  During his tenure at the University of Georgia, he received numerous University-wide teaching awards as well as directing several doctoral dissertations and seven undergraduate research projects.  He is the author or co-author of textbooks on calculus, computer programming, differential equations, linear algebra, and liberal arts mathematics.

Contemporary calculus instructors and students face traditional challenges as well as new ones that result from changes in the role and practice of mathematics by scientists and engineers in the world at large. As a consequence, this sixth edition of our calculus textbook is its most extensive revision since the first edition appeared in 1982.

Two entire chapters of the fifth edition have disappeared from the table of contents and an entirely new chapter now appears there. Most of the remaining chapters have been extensively rewritten. About 125 of the book's over 750 worked examples are new for this edition and the 1825 figures in the text include 225 new computer-generated graphics. About 600 of its over 7000 problems are new, and these are augmented by 320 new conceptual discussion questions that now precede the problem sets. Moreover, 1050 new true/false questions are included in the Study Guides on the new CD-ROM that accompanies this edition. In summary, almost 2000 of these 8400-plus problems and questions are new, and the text discussion and explanations have undergone corresponding alteration and improvement.

PRINCIPAL NEW FEATURES

The current revision of the text features

• Early transcendentals fully integrated in Semester I.
• Differential equations and applications in Semester II.

Complete coverage of the calculus of transcendental functions is now fully integrated in Chapters 1 through 6—with the result that the Chapter 7 and 8 titles in the 5th edition table of contents do not appear in this 6th edition.

A new chapter on differential equations (Chapter 8) now appears immediately after Chapter 7 on techniques of integration. It includes both direction fields and Eider's method together with the more elementary symbolic methods (which exploit techniques from Chapter 7) and interesting applications of both first- and second-order equations. Chapter 10 (Infinite Series) now ends with a new section on power series solutions of differential equations, thus bringing full circle a unifying focus of second-semester calculus on elementary differential equations.

Excellent book!

I just finished self-studying Calculus using this book. During the last six months that it took me to finish, never did I find the need for a teacher.

This book covers the topics taught in the first three semesters of an undergraduate math-related course. There are 14 chapters in all: 1) Functions, Graphs, and Models 2) Prelude to Calculus 3) The Derivative 4) Additional Applications of the Derivative 5) The Integral 6) Applications of the Integral 7) Techniques of Integration 8) Differential Equations 9) Polar Coordinates and Parametric Curves 10) Infinite Series 11) Vectors, Curves, and Surfaces in Space 12) Partial Differentiation 13) Multiple Integrals 14) Vector Calculus.

Each chapter begins with a page of related historical details in order to engage the reader. This is followed by around 4-10 sections, each of which has an exercise with 30 problems (on an average) and 10 True/False questions. After reading the theory for a section, solve 10 problems from the exercise. [Make sure you use MATLAB (or any similar software) and a Graphing Calculator whenever a problem requires it. Wolfram Mathematica Online Integrator is another useful tool.] Then do the True/False questions and move on to the next section.

The problems are a lot of fun to do and some of them are quite challenging. So buy the Solutions Manual if you think you need it, but only after you finish the entire book (so that you don't peek!). Answers to odd-numbered problems and all True/False questions are given at the end. Also, there are appendices for those of you who need to brush up your algebra/trigonometry/basic concepts.

A Good Calculus Text

The only draw back that I find with this book, and many of the well-known and used Calculus books like Larson's Calculus: AP Edition is that there isn't enough discussion of the concept of the Integral as an Accumulation Function. The AP Calculus tests now have placed considerable emphasis on these functions in the Free Response questions with initial conditions. Granted, the text here being reviewed is not an AP textbook, and compared to Larson's AP edition, Edward's has more of a discussion of the Integral as an Accumulation Function, though he doesn't describe the Integral in this way that I've seen. Yet there is just a smattering of questions at the end of the chapter that seem to me to not be at AP level as one would encounter on the exam. There should be a chapter or more devoted to this concept and use of the Integral and a generous supply of AP level test questions at the end, instead of a tiny section and a smattering of accumulation function exercises because this area and concept of the Integral is currently in vogue.

Even in some of the so-called "Applied Calculus" texts, there is no mention of these functions at all, except one I found Calculus Concepts: An Informal Approach to the Mathematics of Change (Textbooks Available with Cengage Youbook) which appears to have some sections and a whole chapter that discusses the Integral in this way in applications. This should be good practice for those preparing for the AP exams. I purchased it and hope it is what it appears to be: a book that discusses in depth the Integral as an Accumulation Function and fills the void that many Calculus books have in this area - even AP titles. If so, I will recommend it to students as a supplement.

One stop shopping for the cutting edge

The problem with any book trying to bring together the various new protocols for EMDR application to populations and problem areas is simply the speed of development. Nonetheless, for therapists looking to avoid "re-inventing the wheel," then this guide is very useful. It's nuts and bolts approach, frequently offering protocol variations that are "rivals," gives therapists a chance to fine-tune their work with particular situations. Certainly, there will be a point when clinical experience and formal research will identify one variation of the EMDR protocol as superior to the others, but in the meantime this book (and its companion) gives a therapist using EMDR a place from which to begin and directions that are clear.

Great addition to EMDR library

This book is fabulous. Each chapter is explicit and cross referenced with other work that has been previously published. EMDR has been such a positive adjunct to the work that I do with Women who have experienced abuse and trauma. This book offers specifics on helping people who have found some creative(though unhealthy) ways of coping with their chaotic and traumatic lives.

A charmingly delightful book, a guaranteed heart-pleaser!

One very run-down diner and three beautiful, independent sisters. Sounds like the makings for a perfect romance, doesn't it? Beloved romance author Judy Christenberry sets hearts aflutter again with her new "Lucky Charm Sisters" series by Silhouette. In her vivacious style, Christenberry acquaints her readers with the plucky O'Connor sisters and the tiny converted-trolley car/diner, called The Lucky Charm, that binds their lives together. Maggie O'Connor, the serious, level-headed sister is the subject of the second "Lucky Charm" story in "Baby In Her Arms". Maggie's sedate, predictable lifestyle is disrupted when the devilishly handsome Josh McKinley appears in her life with a baby in his arms and pleading "I need a woman." Maggie instantly falls in love with baby Ginny. But heaven help her, she was falling for Ginny's daddy too! Would a "marriage in name only" stay that way, or would Maggie finally find the love she longed for? The "Lucky Charm Sisters" are a charmingly delightful series from a delightfully charming author, and one of my favorite people. Judy Christenberry's romances are sure-fire, guaranteed heart-pleasers.

Romance at its best..

This story is a sure read for anyone who enjoys a lovely romantic story. It had me turning the pages over one after the other so fast I was sorry to come to the end. Like the other two books in this series about three sisters, Judy Christenberry seems to know how to make the reader feel that we are part of the plot. This was a case of being in the right place at the right time for Joshuah who was left holding the baby. Not knowing which way to turn he meets an old friends daughter who immediately falls in love with the baby on sight, and thats when things start to happen fast for Maggie. For it is not long before she realises she has fell in love with the daddy also. It is also a very good story which you find yourself getting into quickly. If you like a good romance you will like this Im sure.

Great workbook. Running through these questions over and over made the NYS licensing exam a cinch. I recommend scanning blank pages before writing in your book so you can print worksheets to do practice questions.

A thorough introduction to the topic

I took Professor Cherkassky's class at the University of Minnesota which is supplemented by this book. The book is a pretty exhaustive introduction to the topic; it starts by giving a historical perspective, then provides an introduction to basic learning approaches, followed by a chapter on philosophical perspectives and then dives in to statistical learning theory and methods. As a student, the book was sometimes difficult to learn from because it is very math heavy, although examples and figures are scattered throughout to help with understanding. There are also about fifteen exercises at the end of each of the ten chapters, and a "full" homework assignment can be made up of just 2-4 of these problems. This would also be a good reference for anyone looking to get in to research on this subject. It should provide enough information to provide a full understanding of many learning methods, including decision trees, neural network methods, and SVM classifiers & regression, along with methods to combine these methods. Overall a well written and well organized resource.

Thorough, engaging introduction to machine learning

As a physician engaged in clinical research, I am interested in new methods to learn from the volumes of data we generate in the care of patients. This work is a great introduction to newer learning approaches (e.g., neural networks and support vector machines) that are typically not covered in medical school or clinical research training courses. The clarity of writing in Predictive Learning is such that the content is approachable to anyone in any discipline. The real-world examples discussed throughout the text make it a very enjoyable read. I highly recommend Predictive Learning to anyone looking for a thorough, engaging introduction to machine learning.

This is a useful textbook to those who want to learn the basics of learning theory especially from a statistical perspective. It has been produced by a leader in the field and it gives an interesting insights on some of the most advanced concepts of machine learning an prediction today.

The book addresses some key philosophical issues related to machine learning and our responsibility with developing novel technologies for the benefit of the society. Such aspects should be standard components of any course in the field. Well written.

Great college text !!

This is a required textbook in an on-line class I am taking, I think the ideas in this book are laid out very well. I don't have any other book on this subject to compare it to so I can only assume that the information covered in this text is current, useful and worthwhile studying.

The reason i give this text five stars is because of the great reading practice sections, I am thoroughly enjoying it and for a text book this is just amazing. I think the authors have done an amazing job in gathering many interesting and fun articles/excerpts from a wide variety of subjects. such as nature, Buddhism, Howard Zinn and Roald Dahl.

I really find this textbook fun and I hope any instructor who reads this review will try this book in his next class (as long as the information presented in this book is relevant).

Important; Insightful; Imperfect

Nicholas Hagger is a wonderful writer, whose works I have only recently discovered, and yet have thoroughly enjoyed. Here, he takes on the very important topic of the freemasonic founding, development, and current status of the United States of America. And he does so in a manner that is both wonderfully entertaining and extraordinarily insightful.

Hagger's thesis is essentially that the elite who founded America, and have ever since run her, hide behind a Christian veneer their duplicitious masonic agenda. He proves this conclusively, with meticulous documentation, and truly admirable style.

With Hagger, I always seem to have a couple points of contention. And this excellent work is no exception. Early on, he succombs, I think, to stock anti-Catholic propaganda in his description of early Catholic Florida. And his final statement reflects a certain sympathy with the notion of a One World Government, so long as that entity is animated by the "Light". Yet, these departures from sound logic and revelation do not significantly detract from the overall excellence of this very important and insightful book. I recommend this book strongly to anyone who would understand the true nature of American history and the contemporary influences on American governance. And I look forward to absorbing still more wisdom from this really quite excellent expositor.

great book!

very informational. He has a very non biased view on the beginnings of the United States. He avoids the conspiracy theories with factual knowledge. I have read other books on the FreeMasons, but this one reveals all sides of their society and explains the direction they wish to travel. A definite read for anyone interested in secret societies and how it is tied in with the founding of north america.

Fact and fiction

I would recommend this book to anyone who is unaware of the fact that George Washington was a Mason. Freemasons were heavily involved in the founding of America and were also involved in the founding of the cities and towns across this nation, even after the Revolution. Taking advantage of their secret society allowed the Masons to do behind the scenes political work which was needed. However, the author's main point is that the Masons were against the Puritans and Christianity. I don't think he substantiated that point. The undermining of the Puritans was mostly done by the Unitarian Sect which was active and illegal in this country until Washington allowed them to worship openly. If the author would have connected the Masons to the Unitarians, he would have shined the light of truth on a conspiracy. As it is, I have to wonder if the real conspiracy isn't that the historians manage to overlook the Unitarians and their hand in the demise of Puritanism in this country and their continued anti-Christian activities.
