About the Author

Jothy Rosenberg is a professor-turned-entrepreneur who has founded six companies. He has written two previous technical books and holds several patents. Jothy has a PhD in Computer Science from Duke University.

Arthur Mateos left his career as an experimental nuclear physicist to become a technology entrepreneur. He was an early pioneer of the CDN space and has a patent awarded on Content Distribution technology. Arthur holds an A.B. in Physics from Princeton University, and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics from MIT.

excellent first book on cloud computing

I am very impressed with the quality of this book as each of the nine chapters is very well written and weaved together to tell a very powerful story. It builds up a very compelling case for cloud computing as the book covers many aspects of cloud computing with sufficient technical depth from general, high level concepts and classifications down to design of cloud-enabled applications for scalability and reliability.

There are currently 3 classifications for cloud computing:
1)IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) - Amazon EC2, Microsoft Azure etc
2)PaaS (Platform as a Service) - Google App Engine, VMWare CloudFoundry, Microsoft Azure etc
3)SaaS (Software as a Service) - Salesforce Force.com, Google Docs etc

The author presents a very clear explanation for each of the different classifications of cloud computing and even shows us some basic REST API on how to access Amazon EC2 and S3. The elasticity (on demand) and pay-as-you-use nature of cloud computing provides real savings in dollars and cents and provide agility to the business as the author carefully draws out. I like how the author makes the case that cloud computing is here to stay and will be the disruptive technology of today as it is adopted based on real business needs instead of based solely on technology. There will definitely be a huge emergence of zero-cost startups who can go a long way without asking for VC fundings as they can get infrastructure with thousands of servers serving millions of users with fraction of costs compared to the traditional way of owning IT infrastructure in house.

Security is a major concern in adopting cloud technology. The author acknowledged it and attempted to address the concerns by showing various security precautions taken by existing cloud vendors. Throughout the book, the author takes a neutral stance on various issues and even layout various reasons when NOT to use cloud. However, I sense the author tried to too easily dismiss security as a valid and serious concern for adopters as he believed cloud vendors will provide much better security than even in house data centers in the near future.

The author also presents an intriguing case on how open source movement will drive the adoption of cloud computing, just like cloud computing will fuel the growth of open source. The same relationship also exists for smart devices where the exponential growth of smart devices accessing the web will accelerate the adoption of cloud computing and making the current devices even more powerful and appealing. For those more technical readers who are looking to implement cloud technologies, you will not be disappointed even when this book appeals to a very broad audience. It goes into distributed database concepts such as sharding, mapreduce and cloud bursting using hybrid clouds like amazon virtual private clouds. If you want to know what cloud computing is and why the hype around it, just buy and read this book. You will be glad you did.

Good introduction to cloud computing

Potential readers of this text, especially those familiar with Manning, might be interested in knowing that in their preface, the authors indicate they "had to convince Manning to publish a book that wasn't aimed squarely at programmers. When we told them the book had no source code, that didn't compute. We held firm, arguing that a huge need exists for a book that tells it like it is for the enterprise IT worker. The cloud will eventually have its greatest effect on the largest of organizations. But they're precisely the organizations that have the most trouble changing. We wanted to talk directly to you about how to undertake this shift, what it will mean to you and your organization, and how to proceed in a sane and reasonable manner."

The authors are correct that this need exists, and after reading what they have to offer here, this space will continue to need additional contributions for quite some time. As a consultant leading a virtualization project this past year, a prior reading of this text would have helped prepare me for some of the discussions that ensued with client personnel. While technical texts such as "VMWare vSphere 4" by Scott Lowe (see my review), significantly increased my confidence at a product level, the periodic conversations surrounding what can be seen as a possible next step following virtualization, use of a cloud, could have benefited from materials like the authors provide here, because quite simply there are very few product neutral, cloud focused texts.

The authors actually do provide some source code, however minimal, in this text, but it is mainly confined to what Amazon provides with its cloud API. Some code snippets from competitors such as Microsoft are also provided for contrast, even though the authors indicate throughout the text that Amazon leads the pack and predict that Amazon will continue to lead in upcoming years, mainly because Amazon got to the starting line earlier due to providing to the public what it first had utilized solely for internal solutions. The first few chapters, entitled "What is Cloud Computing?", "Understanding Cloud Computing Classifications", "The Business Case for Cloud Computing", "Security and the Private Cloud", and "Designing and Architecting for Cloud Scale", together with the concluding chapter, "The Future of the Cloud", were well done, but chapters "Achieving High Reliability at Cloud Scale", "Testing, Deployment, and Operations in the Cloud", and "Practical Considerations" feel at times rushed or out of place.

The target audience of this book is probably greater than what the authors surmise, which is to say that regardless of whether protential readers are managers or programmers, anyone interested in quickly getting up to speed with some of the core tenants of cloud computing can probably benefit from this book. As a consultant architect, I especially appreciated the persistence of the authors throughout the text of focusing on the five main principles that define cloud computing (pooled computing resources available to any subscribing users, virtualized computing resources to maximize hardware utilization, elastic scaling up or down according to need, automated creation of new virtual machines or deletion of existing ones, and resource usage billed only as used). In addition, the authors present the high-level business and architectural cases for cloud computing well.

This book exceeds all my expectations

I confess I was a little skeptical when I started reading this book. I was looking for a broad explanatory cloud computing book but not a too shallow one. Neither I was expecting a full detailed book, since each cloud has its specific ways of configuration according to either its flavor or vendor.

When I read the paragraph at begining of the book saying "This book is for business managers, IT managers, IT architects, CIOs, CTOs, CEOs, IT strategy decision-makers, and all potential cloud services buyers" I started to wonder if it was worth reading at all, because as a software senior developer I'm not looking for superficial introduction only. But against my prejudice I persist reading and I was surprised to see that this book contains lots of technical and practical information not only intended to managers at all, like detailed examples of how to create and deploy hosted services into some clouds, either using actually piece of code or RESTful-like URL examples. Also, chapter 5 describes de design and details of a cloud scale.

It's very interesting to detail this type of info, since a manager, CIO, CTO or whatever non-developer staff possibly wouldn't fully understand (and also don't need to), but with that in the content it will reach a little bit deeper explanation. Regarding this not so shallow approach, the book can also explain a little bit deeper how things really
work and avoid the superficial of a well know manager-intended technical book. Perhaps, if you are a manager ou CIO you may hear lots of mumbo-jumbo at first, but this won't make you stop reading I suppose. It is not that boring and you may understand how things work from technical side, and how easy it is for some cloud vendors to stand up and running using a few commands. And more important, it will make you able to distinguish between the types of clouds.

Obviously there are geneneric and superficial code examples, and the book don't dig deeper into details, but this is not the point after all.

I think is very helpful the many types of cloud explanation on chapter 2 and why choose one or another. As the author said, they focused on "how the cloud works by looking under the hood and examining the technological underpinnings". Very clear and directly into the point.

The full detailed vendor clouds are shown, including technological infrastructure offered, cloud service details and prices.
This book lets you know what is a cloud computing model, how it works, why to choose among cloud environments and when to choose it. Also it explains in details why the cloud model is not the silver bullet for "super-cost-saving architecture" as everybody may think, explaining why cloud model may not be suitable for legacy systems, applications involving real time scenarios or even for application dealing with very confidential data.

The content deals with what the could computing is, the classification of cloud types, a small business case to help you choose among IT solutions, cloud security, designing and architecting for cloud scale, achieving high reliability at cloud scale, testing / deploying, considerations and beyond cloud.

This collection hit the front page of the New York Times its first time out of the blocks in 1999, as the University of Pittsburgh Press, Collins's longtime publisher, denied Random the rights to the poems as the poet tried to jump ship. The two houses and Collins's agent, Chris Calhoun (Dan Menaker is Collins's editor at Random), later worked out a deal that gave Pitt a few more months to ride Picnic, Lightning (1998) and Collins's other books without this culling treading on its sales. As it now appears, the book includes 23 poems from Picnic, more than from any of Collins's previous three books included here. (Work from the early Video Poems and Pokerface is absent.) Collins's poems are generally conveyed by a speaker whose genial, highly literate analogue of earnestness perfectly produces inchoate quotidian restlessness matched by fear-based appreciation of the mundane. A typical Collins poem begins with "How agreeable it is not to be touring Italy this summer," "The way the dog trots out the front door" or the observation that "It is possible to be struck by a meteor/ or a single-engine plane/ while reading in a chair at home" and continues by juxtaposing, say, close descriptions of "the instant hand of Death" and "the rasp of the steel edge/ against a round stone,/ the small plants singing/ with lifted faces." It's a formula that has worked well for Collins, and he does not abandon it in the 20 new poems here. (On-sale date: Sept. 11) Forecast: A reading on NPR's A Prairie Home Companion was the beginning of serious sales for Picnic, Lightning (40,000 copies and counting), while The Art of Drowning has sold 26,000 since 1995, and Questions About Angels clocks in at 21,000 since 1991. This new volume from the newly appointed poet laureate of the United States has survived the publishing rights war between Random House and the University of Pittsburgh Press. The wait has been well worth it. The surface structure of these poems appears simplistic, but subtle changes in tone or gesture move the reader from the mundane to the sublime. In an attempt to sleep, the speaker in "Insomnia" moves from counting sheep to envisioning Noah's arc to picturing "all the fish in creation/ leaping a fence in a field of water,/ one colorful species after another." Collins will tackle any topic: his subject matter varies from snow days to Aristotle to forgetfulness. The results are accessible but not trite, comical but not laughable, and well crafted but not overly flamboyant. Collins relies heavily on imagery, which becomes the cornerstone of the entire volume, and his range of diction brings such a polish to these poems that the reader is left feeling that this book "once opened, can never be closed." Take Collins Along

The first poem I read of Billy Collins' was "Forgetfulness". I am glad it is in this collection because it so well epitomizes the everyday nature of his poems, the way he speaks to us as if we were just visiting and he is describing some incident in his life, or expounding on something that matters to him. I could see him in the student lounge, in the leather chair next to the Rodin, at our local Dry Dock Brewery or at a coffee shop. He would be the one we would all gather around. I am the one, however, who posted that his reading style doesn't do justice to his writing. In retrospect, maybe his low key reading is nuanced to go with his poems.

Now, that I have been trying to write poems, when I read his poems, I find myself wanting to mimic his writing style. One of the things I notice is that he doesn't hurry things, he doesn't summarize. I feel rushed in my writing, like I'm giving an acceptance speech at the Oscars and someone is standing off camera signaling me to wrap it up. Billy, though, for example, in "Fishing on the Susquehanna in July" takes 13 stanzas to describe how the closest he ever came to fishing on the Susquehanna was seeing a painting in a museum, in Philadelphia, of someone in a little boat fishing on the Susquehanna. These extra lines, though, give the poem its depth and reality and the well drawn images then stay with you.

Billy Collins then goes deeper and adds themes to his basic subject matter. If Norman Rockwell had painted like Billy writes the pictures would not only have been warm slices of Americana, they would have contained poignant bits of reality such as maybe a woman looking bored at Thanksgiving Dinner or quarreling with whomever was seated by her.

I like how he shares with us as if we were his close friends. For example, in "The Three Wishes" he goes through the first several stanzas showing how the foolish man and wife wasted the wishes they were granted. The man, hungry from work, wishes for sausages which angers his wife who then wishes the pan to stick to his nose. Collins discusses the moral of the story, the foolishness of the couple and what they could have had. Then, he ends, in an almost covert whisper by telling us that this story always makes him hungry for sausages.

And of course he makes it all look so easy. Another favorite of mine is "Dharma" about his dog who "If only she did not shove the cat aside/every morning/and eat all his food/what a model of self-containment she would be". His use of line breaks and enjambment set the pace and place emphasis where he wants it. His techniques are subtle such as his use of consonance in this poem with brown coat, blue collar, steady breathing. He uses assonance too in this poem, earthly, eager, ears.

It's neat that he became Poet Laureate, that he was recognized for what he offers. This collection of his is a great book, for yourself or as a gift for a dear friend.

Expanding Your Mind One Poem at a Time

Billy Collins’ poetry collection "Sailing Alone Around the Room: New and Selected Poems" is a book for the average everyday reader or a reader who is new to poetry. Unlike poetry that is heavy in its meaning, metaphors, or use of older English such as poetry by William Shakespeare, John Milton, or Robert Frost, Collins creates poetry that is more accessible to the modern reader by making his poetry more approachable, especially if the reader is new to poetry. The different ways his poetry is more approachable is through his readability, language usage, relatable content, and his use of imagery.

Readability
Collins poetry is humorous, light, and insightful allowing an inexperienced reader to easily read through his poetry while also giving substance to the more devout poetry reader. He is able to gently guide the reader through a poem allowing the reader to smile, to get anxious, or to laugh without always having to look for a deeper meaning, as the surface of the poem is just as telling as the deeper meaning.

Language Use
His modern language is relatable to everyone in the modern age giving a feeling of inclusiveness to his poetry. New readers will be able to laugh with Collins in his poem “Another Reason Why I Don’t Keep a Gun in the House”, while more experienced readers will enjoy other poems such as the poem “Litany”.

Relatable
Most of the poems within this collection have relatable content. There are multiple poems relating to school settings, and usually end up as parodies that give passing commentary as well as entertainment to this theme. If you are a history buff, then Billy Collins poems are for you as well, as many of his poems make comments on historical events. Overall, this collection has a variety of poems that allow almost all readers to connect with at least one poem.

Imagery
Another advantage of reading Collins’ poetry is his use of imagery. The reader does not need to struggle to understand the content because of the simplicity of the language he uses, and the ability to create an image in the reader’s mind. Collins’ poetry is good at creating an image in the reader’s head through the words he chooses to use.

Intelligent, accessible, striking poetry

Billy Collins describes his poetry best himself, in "Lines Lost Among Trees", when he writes of "...the little insight at the end/wagging like the short tail/of a perfectly obedient spaniel/sitting by the door." Many of the poems throughout this collection feature a turn of phrase- if not a twist, then a recapitulation- in the final stanza that makes the reader draw a breath, then say "Yes. That's it."
There's little that's academic or self-consciously poetical about Collins' writing, although he is both a professor and a poet for whom his art is subject matter as much as medium. Some of the best, most touching and funniest works in this collection deal with poetry itself, but none are contrived. There's sensuality along with intelligence- "Osso Buco", "The Best Cigarette" and others deal concretely but delicately with the sensations of living and a poet's response to them. There's jazz in plenty, evoked, imitated and responded to, and plenty of musings (and musings on musings) on the poetical old standbys of sex and death. And it all works.
I couldn't find lines better than Collins' own to begin this review, nor to end it (from "Reading an Anthology of Chinese Poems of the Sung Dynasty, I Pause to Admire the Length and Clarity of Their Titles"):
How easy he has made it for me to enter here,
to sit down in a corner;
cross my legs like his, and listen.

He grew up watching Star Trek, Star Wars, and other science fiction series with his family when he was young. Star Trek; The Next Generation was a ritual in his house. In his spare time, he collected a respectable collection of comic books and Magic: The Gathering cards. Review of The Emerald Tablet by Joshua Silverman

The Emerald Tablet is a unique blend of fantasy, science fiction, and ancient history.

It takes place partly on modern Earth at an archeological site in the ancient Egyptian city of Siwa and partly on a distant planet called Potara, a futuristic world where society has learned to harness the elemental energy of the universe through preists schooled in the wisdom of the ancient Greek and Egyptian gods. Throughout the book, Greek and Egyptian mythology come into play, and you can tell Silverman has a substantial amount of knowledge about the two cultures.

The plot mixes a lot action with romance, friendship, sibling rivalry, mysticism and metaphysics. It has heroes, lovers, and traitors. There is a large cast of characters of varying ages and personalities. Like The Game of Thrones series, it tells the story from different perspectives and takes the reader into the mind of many characters. The main character that ties the book together seems to be Leoros, a teenage boy raised by an archeologist and a scientist, whose lifelong fascination with science fiction and comic books has filled him with a strong need to be like the heroes he reads about. His destiny is tied to Altantia, a slave girl on Potara with the gift of prophecy. Then, there is Pythos, a priest with past that has caught up with him and mentor to four apprentices whose ambitions and secret agendas drive the story. Of course, no book is complete without villains and The Emerald Tablet has several, but there will be no spoilers in this review.

The book was an interesting read, but overall I give it a mixed review. As a first novel, it bears some of the trademarks of inexperienced writers: too much telling and not enough showing (Silverman spends too much time inside the characters' heads and it gets repetitive), some plot inconsistencies, and characters that could have been more developed. But the book has a lot of potential: an absorbing fantasy world, a plot with twists and turns, and the tie in to ancient mythology that lends it credibility. Silverman also does a good job with the action scenes, painting cinematic descriptions of fights and battles. The Emerald Tablet is the first in a series, and the characters are compelling enough that I want to know what happens to them next. I'll be reading book two.

What intrigued me most about this book was the description and the adventure quality. It sounded so mythical and amazing at the same time. I have to admit that the beginning of this story was a little confusing but once you get into it and learn who the people are and what the land is about you can dive right into the action-packed adventure of the story.

I really liked the different characters and the main premise of the book. Leoros was an amazing main character, he really stole the book from the other characters. I loved getting inside his head and learning about everything he was going through. The basic premise of the book is that Leoros is with his parents in Egypt and he goes through a pillar into another world, called Potara. On Potara, he learns that he is able to manipulate energy with his feelings. Who wouldn't want to be able to manipulate energy with your mind and be able to fight and do stuff with it. Then more craziness ensues, don't want to give anything away, and he has to go on an amazing journey to find himself and go up against the bad guys.

The thing about this book is that it also has an evil and adult side. I wouldn't say it is 100% young adult, it is more grounded in fantasy, but if you can take some sexual scenes, violence and some talk about both of them then it is still a really great book and perfectly fine to read for the older young adults, not so much for the really young. I really also liked the evil and dark side to this book. The antagonists weren't really your average bad guys. You felt for the girls that had to do the bad things because that is how they were raised. This book really shows how people can become corrupt and power hungry very easily.

The other thing I really loved was that this book doesn't just stay with the main character telling the story it jumps from character to character. I even loved that it tells the story of Leoros' parents when they find out he is missing. I really liked the struggle of good versus evil and the battle that came from the opposing sides. Joshua Silverman is a really good writer and knows how to tell a story from start to finish. He takes you on a ride through worlds and a variety of different characters to bring an amazing story to the page. I really can't wait to read more from Joshua Silverman.

I really suggest reading this book if you love young adult but can stomach more of an adult theme for a younger genre novel. All of the characters really have depth and good backgrounds worked into their stories. I also really liked the young romance that happened and hopefully will blossom even more in the next book. I really can not wait to read the next installment of this series and to be able to delve back into the world. The one small complaint I have is that the story was a little bit long and could have ended earlier instead of having so much description and things going on in the beginning. I was very pleasantly surprised by all the twists and turns and I really suggest reading it to everyone that likes mythology, fantasy, sci-fi, and young adult. I really suggest picking up a copy, you really won't be disappointed. I loved reading every minute of it. =]

unrealized potential

I started Legends of Amun Ra- The Emerald Tablet with high hopes.
I have been interested in myths and legends, specifically Greek and Egyptian since I was a wee little one. This book sounded like it would mix some of my favorite old legends with a modern sci-fi twist.
Joshua Silverman has created a concept that is very intriguing, playing on the whole Stargate idea of aliens and earth's history. The basic ideas behind the story are great. The execution is not quite as flawless.
Let me start with the fact there are typos and other errors in the copy I received - which is an ebook. The formatting was off. There were lines of space in the middle of sentences for no reason and page breaks in incorrect places. This made it difficult to read. Occasionally some of the text almost appeared formatted for poetry - I hope that was unintentional as it made no sense. The choice of order for some of the chapters and how they were divided was confusing as well.
I understand the need to provide exposition and back story - but it is not done in a very easily understandable manner. I can respect wanting to create mystery and questions that will be answered, but that needs to be tempered with making sure the reader can firmly grasp everything they need to enjoy and understand the rest of the story.
And the one, for this book, semi-graphic sex scene at the beginning of chapter 2 seems like it comes from a completely different book. It felt ill-fitting the first time I read it and I understood why after finishing the book. It doesn't match with anything else in the book and what needed to be conveyed in that scene could have been provided in another way - much less awkwardly.
The story itself is an interesting one. Leoros is an adolescent boy who has been dragged around the world by his archaeologist mom. It is on one such dig that Leoros manages to get himself transported to another planet via an Egyptian artifact.
One thing I am still not clear on is how this other planet (and the moon that some people were banished to) fit into our timeline. At times it seemed as if the number of years talked about on Earth versus this other planet were not matching up.
There are some very interesting characters and when I could force myself past the poor formatting and rather heavy handed writing I found myself being drawn into the story. Unfortunately I would be popped right back out when I had to pause to try to clarify some point by going back in the book or when there was no clarification or reason for something that I could find.
Complicated interesting stories are great but they can't be so complicated as to be rendered almost incomprehensible. At times it felt almost as if too many ideas were being worked into one story. Egyptian mythology, magic, coming of age, space travel, saving the world, falling in love, rebelling against your parents, revenge, action - it is quite a bit for one story. Not to mention jumping back and forth between Earth, a far off planet and some moon and about 12 different story lines.
The ending of this book really chapped my hide though. It was as if someone cut the power to the TV 10 minutes before end of a movie you had never seen or ripped out the last 10 pages of a book you had never read.
It may seem like I am being really harsh and critical - and I am - but it is because there is some really great potential in there. Joshua Silverman needs a really firm editor to help focus his ideas and he could be creating something amazing. Someone to help him sift through and hone what is a potentially a really great story.
All in all this is a book with great potential but that probably needed another round of editing before being released.

About the Author
Lawrence G. Weiss, PhD is Vice President of Test Development for Pearson Clinical Assessment. He oversees a department of 150 professionals and is responsible for all research and test development activities related to the company’s psychological, educational, speech, language, and occupational therapy assessment products as well as post college admissions tests. He also advises on test development activities for the company’s international business partners around the globe including Pearson Clinical Assessment offices in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, The Netherlands, India, China, Spain, and Brazil.

Dr. Weiss has presented widely on intelligence in more than a dozen countries. He has authored or co-authored the following 7 graduate level text books:

• WISC-IV Clinical Use and Interpretation (2005)

About the Author

Robert M. McManus is the McCoy Associate Professor of Leadership Studies and Communication at the McDonough Leadership Center at Marietta College in Ohio. He co-edited Leading in Complex Worlds (Jossey-Bass) and has served as the Chair of the Leadership Education MIG for the International Leadership Association.

Gama Perruci is the Dean of the McDonough Leadership Center at Marietta College in Ohio. He also serves as a consultant for The New York Times (nytimesinleadership.com) and leadership session facilitator for Dartmouth College’s Rockefeller Center for Public Policy and the Social Sciences.
